چکیده

A new model is proposed to explain the origin of enigmatic fine-grained granulite facies rocks sampled from the Moon, based on observations from the Vredefort dome, South Africa. The dome is the deeply eroded central uplift of the ;300-km-diameter Vredefort impact structure. In the dome, fine-grained granulites displaying poikilitic or granoblastic microstructures were formed by relatively slow cooling of shock 6 friction melts derived at T . 1350 8C. Slow cooling was achieved owing to the .7 km depth of burial of the rocks following the impact. At least some of the lunar granulitic impactites may also have formed by shock heating and slow cooling at deep levels within the central uplifts of large impact structures, without the need for additional heating by younger intrusive or impact melt bodies.

Evidence for high stress in quartz from the impact site of Vredefort, South Africa

A microstructural investigation of stishovite-bearing quartzite from the Vredefort meteorite impact site in South Africa reveals features that are attributed to shock deformation. These include abundant mechanically induced Dauphiné twinning, rhombohedral deformation lamellae and associated residual stresses. Mechanical twins were identified with SEM-EBSD. Residual stresses are derived from equ...

U-Pb COMPOSITION AND SHOCK MICROSTRUCTURES OF IN-SITU ACCESSORY PHASES ACROSS THE VREDEFORT IMPACT STRUCTURE, SOUTH AFRICA: A TERRESTRIAL ANALOGUE FOR DATING THE LUNAR SURFACE AND OTHER PLANETARY BODIES

Introduction: Highly refractory micro-minerals such as zircon, monazite and baddeleyite can survive and record intense shock metamorphism, and occasionally recrystallize to date impact events. Their microscale records have the potential to be used to deduce the timing and magnitude of large impacts in ex-situ solar system samples (i.e. meteorites, crystal clasts in breccias) provided we have a ...

Magnetic anomaly near the center of the Vredefort structure: Implications for impact-related magnetic signatures: Comment and Reply COMMENT

Hart et al. (1995) postulated that large meteorite impacts may generate characteristic magnetic signatures due to thermal resetting of remanent magnetism, as a consequence of the impact process. Their postulation is based on the results of a study of the ca. 2 Ga Vredefort structure which shows that the remanent magnetism of rocks from the core of the structure was reset penecontemporaneously w...

Micro-Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy of shock veins in metaquartzites from the Vredefort impact structure: controls on coesite and stishovite genesis

Introduction: In this work, we report on the results of a combined scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy investigation of stishovite and coesite in shocked Hospital Hill quartzite from the Vredefort impact structure of South Africa. Sanples have investigated using optical microscopy and under the scanning electron microscope, using energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS),...

Inversion of regional gravity gradient data over the Vredefort Impact Structure, South Africa

We present the results for 3D inversion of gravity gradiometry data over the Vredefort Impact Structure in South Africa. With the rapidly growing field of gravity gradiometry, an investigation into the extraction of information from multiple components is warranted. Though the gradient tensor has five independent components, any combination of the components can be used to invert for a structur...
